WildEarth Guardians’ Landmark Victories
Killing Stops on Over Six Million Acres of Our Public LandsNEVADA LITIGATION OCTOBER 2016 The lives of thousands of native animals may eventually be spared as a result of our landmark legal agreement that ceases all killing activities in designated Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas in Nevada—at least until a modern environmental assessment and analysis is complete. Because the judge also ordered that Wildlife Services could no longer rely on their woefully outdated programmatic analysis, we are hopeful the settlement marks a sea change and that Wildlife Services will adopt a coexistence mandate.
Wildlife Services’ Wolf Killing Stopped in Washington StateWASHINGTON LITIGATION DECEMBER 2015 A federal judge agreed with WildEarth Guardians and our allies that Wildlife Services’ killing program failed to analyze the impacts of its proposed killing activities on wolves themselves and on the larger environment, both in Washington and surrounding states. The court ordered all killing authorized by the faulty environmental analysis stopped until the program complies with federal environmental laws.
The public has a right to be informed of and weigh in on the use of taxpayer dollars to kill native wildlife, and the program has a responsibility to ensure ethical and scientific standards are met by federal employees.

Court Ruling Allows Guardians to Challenge Wildlife Services’ CrueltyNINTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS AUGUST 2015 The court ruled Wildlife Services’ reliance on a 20-year-old analysis, which itself relies on 40-year-old, largely disproven “science,” is not immune from environmental or judicial review. The court also recognized that our interests in viewing native wildlife are real and that the injuries to those interests caused by Wildlife Services could be remedied by the program having to publicly analyze the impacts of its killing activities.
Ban on TrappingCOLORADO CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 1996 This groundbreaking initiative was passed by the citizens of Colorado and added to the state constitution. WildEarth Guardians was one of the co-leads on this effort, in a state with historical ties to the trapping and fur industries.
